Are You Washing Your Hands the Right Way?

We all know that we’re supposed to wash our hands several times a day. And we all do it (right)? Are we doing it the best way?

Let’s start with why it’s important: Washing hands slows the spread of germs, which keeps us all a lot healthier.

Here’s how to do it right (according to the experts):

  • Wet your hands with clean running water. It can be cold or warm.
  • Turn off the tap, and then apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Don’t forget the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for 20 seconds. (Yes, 20 seconds! We know it’s a lot, but it works.)
  • Rinse your hands under clean water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel, or air-dry them.

Ok, so now that we know how to wash our hands, here’s when you need to do it:

  • Before, during and after preparing food
  • Before eating
  • Before and after being with someone who is sick
  • After using the bathroom
  • After cleaning up a child who has used the bathroom or changing a diaper
  • After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
  • After touching an animal or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or treats
  • After touching garbage


But 20 seconds now can be the difference between staying healthy or getting sick, so it’s an easy choice.

    I was taught to wet my hands, apply soap, rub hands vigorously singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice, rinse with warm water, turn off water with clean paper towel, dry hand with clean paper towel.
    Hand dryers can spread germs via the air. Fabric hand towels can spread germs. Open door with clean paper towel or worst scenario my shirt or sleeve to avoid reinfecting in public bathrooms.
