How to Choose a Sustainable Cleaning Product

There are many indicators that can help inform your choice of cleaning product, especially if sustainability is a priority for you and your family.

  • Corporate Sustainability – Most companies these days release sustainability reports at regular intervals. This can be a good place to get an idea of how committed the company is to sustainability and initiatives that go beyond the brand, like corporate carbon footprint reduction efforts.
  • Product Certifications – While products may not acquire all of the certifications they qualify for, this can be a helpful indicator to see if a product is a good match when considering your values, priorities and needs.

There are also some general things to look for in a product that can help steer you in a more sustainable direction:

  • Minimal packaging made with recycled and/or recyclable materials.
  • Concentrated cleaning products that help eliminate excess packaging and waste.
  • Reusable cleaning tools and refillable products.
  • Getting only as much as you can use before the expiration date.

Keep in mind that 90% of the energy use associated with cleaning occurs in the home, like heating water for laundry and washing dishes. After choosing a product, reduce your carbon footprint further with our sustainable cleaning tips!
