Keeping Carpets Clean

When’s the last time you cleaned your carpets? (We mean really cleaned your carpets.) Think about how much you walk on them with shoes that have been all over the place… that’s a lotta dirt.

Vacuuming regularly is a good start. Vacuum cleaners remove dirt and grit particles which get ground in with every footstep (or pawprint) and weaken the fibers of the carpet. But you do need to do a deep clean from time to time, at least once a year (more often if the carpet is in a heavily traveled area).

For a deeper clean, you can have a professional or do it yourself. If you go the DIY route, you can rent a steam cleaner from your grocery store and handle the job on your own. Here are some tips to make the process easier and more effective.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the steam cleaner that you rent and read the instructions before you start.
  2. Steam clean often enough that the carpet isn’t filthy by the time you get to it, which will make it harder and take longer.
  3. Vacuum before you steam clean.
  4. Pre-treat any stains you see before you steam clean. You can use a carpet stain remover product or detergent in hot water. Let the detergent sit on the stain before you start to clean.
  5. Test your carpet cleaner on an out-of-the-way corner of the carpet first to make sure it can tolerate it.
  6. Once you’re done, try to get the carpet dry as soon as possible. You want to get the moisture out of the rug quickly. Turn on fans and open windows.

It was truly helpful when you suggested cleaning the carpet deeply at least once a year, especially in areas that receive heavy traffic in order to remove particles that can be dangerous to the health. I will definitely take note of that, especially now that most of the workers in the firm has been getting sick. It seems like there’s something that affects the respiratory system which triggers coughing and sneezing. I have the feeling that the carpet was responsible for it since we haven’t cleaned it in two years. We need to get it cleaned. Thank you for the ideas!

My mom just gave me their old carpet as she already bought a new set. Actually, it’s not that old, she purchased it last year and maybe because I told her that once she’s going to replace it, she can give it to me. And she did! She told me that all I need to do is to have a steam cleaning. I believe it’ll be best to ask a professional to do that for me!

That’s good to know that you can either have a professional or you can rent a steam cleaner in order to get a deeper clean for your carpets. My carpets are pretty dirty since we have a German Shepherd that comes inside the house and our two sons run around with him outside and then come inside. It’d probably be best if we hired a professional to do our carpets so I can make sure they’re cleaned correctly and I won’t have to worry about leftover dirt.

Thanks for pointing out that we need to deep clean carpets at least once a year to help prolong their life and keep them in good shape. My husband and I are thinking about replacing our home’s carpets, and I want to know how to take care of them properly if we do. I’m glad you shared the tip about having them deep cleaned every year because I wasn’t sure of the recommended frequency for that.
