Q&A: Dishwashers

We know that you know how to use a dishwasher. (You’ve been doing it for how many years now?) But there may be some questions lurking in the back of your mind when you’re loading up after a feast with family and friends.

We’re going to answer them.

Should I use powder, gel, or tablet detergent in my dishwasher?

Whichever you like! They all work well.

How about a rinse agent? Do I need one?

A rinse agent helps make the water in the dishwasher sheet off of your dishes more easily, which can help with rinsing away residue. That leads to fewer water spots on your dishes. A rinse agent also helps dishes dry faster.

Can I use automatic dishwasher detergent anywhere other than the dishwasher?

No. Dishwasher detergent is formulated specifically for the dishwasher, and could actually damage counters, other surfaces or fabrics.

Where should I store my dishwasher detergent?

We recommend keeping powder detergent in a cool, dry place so that it doesn’t get moist, which will make it lumpy. Also, be sure to keep your detergent container closed securely and locked so that little hands and paws can’t get to it.

What should NOT go in the dishwasher?

Anything fragile that can be damaged by the force of water spray and heat inside the dishwasher; cast iron; crystal; decorated glassware; plastics; wooden spoons; silver.
